The movement and sport scientists of Ghent University are united in one department of more than 100 members, the department of Movement and Sport Sciences which is embedded in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. The department is known as a dynamic team with an excellent reputation in education and high-class scientific research; and ranked 9th in the Shanghai worldwide ranking of Sport Science schools and departments 2016.
In 1908, the world’s first academic education on Physical Education was established at Ghent University. In the early days, the institute was highly influenced by biomedical sciences. That base had been maintained and further strengthened with the Sport Science Laboratory Jacque Rogge, but also complemented with insights from other research areas (sociology, psychology, economics, management, and movement sciences).
