INDIVIDUAL ACTORS
Individual vulnerabilities

Different individuals will or will not commit fraud in different circumstances. Individual vulnerabilities play a significant role in the likelihood of involvement in sports-related fraud. Individual vulnerabilities are personal circumstances or characteristics that predispose someone to involvement in sports-related fraud.

Some individual vulnerabilities are:

  • Financial problems can make individuals more likely to engage in fraudulent behavior.

  • For example, the pressure to perform or to avoid relegation can motivate athletes to engage in fraudulent behavior.

  • People who are sensitive to peer pressure are more likely to agree to a proposal, for example. match fixing. Other social vulnerabilities, such as the existence of cultures of silence, can prevent people from reporting fraud.

  • When a coach or fans apply heavy pressure, athletes may feel forced to break rules to meet expectations.

  • Individuals with limited self-control may be more likely to give in to temptations to achieve quick financial or sporting success, even if this requires fraud.

  • Addictions (e.g. gambling) create financial problems and increase the likelihood that someone will engage in fraudulent behavior.

  • A poor understanding of the rules makes it easier for someone to commit fraud, sometimes without being fully aware of the consequences.

There are many different individual vulnerabilities. But there are also individual characteristics that prevent people from committing sports-related fraud. An important individual characteristic is the importance that the person attaches to moral values: the moral identity.
